Strolling Around Lisbon

Lisbon is very old and was once the richest and most exciting city in Europe. It was shattered by a tremendous earthquake, but its determined people rebuilt and Lisbon was once more one of the continent's most vibrant capitals. This is a step by step walk, which will take you up and down Lisbon's hills as you uncover fascinating places and stories.

The walks include maps to make navigation as easy as possible, as you explore the Roman ruins, a multitude of churches, and the best viewpoints.

"You will also see the Martim Moniz gate beneath the rampart you just walked along. Martim Moniz was a knight who became a legendary figure in the Siege of Lisbon. He led an attack on the castle and sacrificed himself by jamming his body into the doorway to stop the Moors closing the door. This allowed the capture of the castle but poor Moniz died for his heroics. He did at least get a door named after him."
