Slip joints utilize a compression ring to make the joint water tight. Rather than cutting the pipe exactly to fit, the excess pipe length slips inside the pipe it is joining with where compression between the two to complete the joint. Some slip joints have built in compression rings; others utilize a slip joint washer that is tightened to make the joint. Slip joint rings have a flat side and a beveled side. The flat side goes against the nut. This pushes the bevel into the beveled edge on the other pipe to make a seal.
